Osbern Fitz Richard of Richard's Castle, Herefordshire


Osbern (or Osborn or Osbert) Fitz Richard (or Fitz Scrop or Fitz Scrob or Le Scrope), son of Richard Fitz Scrob and brother of William Fitz Richard, was born in Richard's Castle in Herefordshire, near Shropshire, England.

He appears to have been old enough to have taken part in the early wars of his father during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-66). Osbern was sheriff of Hereford, 1060. He assisted the castellan of Hereford in subduing the rebel Edric in 1067 while William the Conqueror and the greater part of his nobles were in Normandy.

He married Nest ap Gruffyd ap Llwelyn (1039-64). They had children:

  • Agnes (living in the years 1088-1121+) - of marriageable age in 1088, married Bernard Neufmarche' (living in the years 1085-1121)
  • Hugh Fitz Osbern (living in the years 1130-1140) - married Estache Say (II.1135); they had a son:
    • Osbern Fitz Hugh (living in the years 1140-1185/86) - married Amicia Clifford; they had a son:
      • William
  • Turstin (II.1130)
  • Simon Scrope - had a son:
