Sir John Scrope - Of Castle Combe in Wilts


Sir John Scrope, of Castle Combe, knt., was the only son of Stephen Le Scrope, of Castle Combe, in the County of Wilts, and Oxendon, in Gloucestershire.

Sir John his father's death in 1472, succeeded to the Wilthsire and Gloucestershire estates. He was high sheriff of Wilts in 7th year of Henry VIII.

He married, first, Isabel, daughter of John Newburgh,esq., by whom he had no issue. His second marriage was to Margaret, daughter of Sir John Wrottesley, of Wrottesley, in the county of Stafford, by whom he had children:

  • Richard Scrope - his heir
  • Anthony Scrope - d. inf.
  • Anne - married Henry Viner of Castle Combe
  • Dorothy

Sir John died in 1516, and was succeeded by his eldest son.
